NCMCM (National Children Mountain Conservation Meet)

Mountains carry great significance for human life. They hold our fresh water sources; forests, wildlife and above all they provide us opportunities to refresh our bodies and souls through their scenic splendor. In view of this immense importance of mountains, the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the year 2002 as International Year of Mountains (IYM) mainly to enhance global awareness about the importance of the mountain Eco System.

Adventure Foundation Pakistan (AFP) which has always taken a lead in mountain related sports and environment conservation activities in Pakistan, took the initiative and launched a project, “National Children Mountain Conservation Meet” in July 2002 in this connection to create awareness about significance of Mountain ecology among the new generation of Pakistan.Under this project, more than a hundred children from all parts of Pakistan are taken to mountain areas of Pakistan every year in summer. During the Meet children undertake eco study projects in the target area along with other activities aiming at conservation of environment as well as enhancement of awareness in general public about the significance of mountains. At the end of their field visit, a Children Mountain Forum is organized where participating children share their observations and experiences with concerned government officials, and general public.

The children who attend this meet are given the title of “Eco Guard” which gives them confidence to play an active role in their day to day life to create awareness about the conservation of natural environment and its important role in our lives. So far five National Children Mountain Conservation Meets have been held and 580 children have participated in this project and gained the title of Eco Guard. Each year 100 to 120 children from different parts of country will be added in this list of environmentally conscious children and we hope after few years their will be a good number of young people who will be there to play an important role at national level.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

  1. To create awareness among young people about the uniqueness of the mountain ecosystem by involving them in meaningful practical activities to increase the understanding of environmental issues through sharing experience and opinions.
  2. To promote national integration and build new and lasting friendships by involving youngsters from all corners of Pakistan in experience sharing activities using mountain environment as an open classroom
  3. To give children a stronger voice in greater numbers to express their views and concerns at national and international level.
  4. To spread awareness among the people of mountains about the environmental issues of their area, by demonstrating environment friendly eco-tourism techniques

Presidents Message
Dear Venturers,

We enter the thirty first year of our Endeavour in the field of Outdoor Education with pride of accomplishment. Although acknowledgement at the national level is as yet unattained, general awareness is much in evidence. Action oriented outdoor experience has assisted in raising awareness of the younger generation to the vital place of the natural environment in our lives. Through the young people, this will certainly pass on to the older generation in contact with them. Better to understand so much that is talked about climate change and human generated degradation of the environment in which we live.

The foundation is dedicated to provide safe opportunities to discover and equip themselves with hands-on-experience of outdoor living and serve as true friends of the Earth. As they grow they will take on the responsibilities of protecting and preserving Mother Nature and her wonderful web of life that surrounds us all.

We in the foundation will continue to serve our venturers who will lead us eventually towards a better future for themselves and the next generation to come. Have the life moulding adventure that you deserve and may the new year serve you with gladness.

Islamabad
